When to Replace Your Fuel Filter

For older cars and trucks, the recommended fuel filter replacement interval is usually between 20,000 and 40,000 miles. If the vehicle doesn’t get driven very often, you will still want to replace it every 2-3 years.

For modern vehicles, you can usually wait longer before replacing the fuel filter. Most manufacturers tell you to change the fuel filter somewhere between 40,000 and 80,000. But some manufacturers don’t specify an interval, have a very high interval (150,000 miles for Mercedes Benz), or even say the fuel filter doesn’t need replacement (such as Toyota).

The best thing to do is follow the manufacturer’s recommendation which can usually be found in your car manual. If for some reason you don’t have access to that, call your local dealership or simply use 60,000 miles as the change interval if you have a vehicle manufactured in the last 15 or so years.

Those with diesel engines will likely need to replace their fuel filters much sooner. For instance, GM trucks with the Duramax diesel engine need to have their fuel filters replaced every 22,500 miles for some of their newer trucks while many Ford diesel trucks have 15,000 mile change intervals.

  2. 2011 camry automatic 366k miles all stock parts, going uphill only 50mph. Anything higher will have the car vibrate. Going uphill, Trannie doesn’t even drop gear like it used to for a higher rpm to speed up. Gear 3 and 4 has a slight vibration shifting into gears. Already replaced the air filter and cleaned MAF. Doing 4 coils and spark plugs this weekend. If that doesn’t work, gonna pay someone to do the fuel filter change since I don’t even know where my fuel filter is located at. Maybe inside the tank. Hoping the fuel pump is not the culprit. Already added a bottle of fuel system cleaner by chevron to help clean the fuel injectors. Will need to check for any air leaks from them hoses. No check engine light goes on so my ODB reader doesn’t show any code. Already did trannie drain and fill 2.5 quarts. Did not change trannie filter. Motor has a slow oil leak. I just top it off with synthetic oil every 3000 miles. I changed oil and filter with synthetic oil every 7,000 miles.

  3. I had the same regular problem s with my car as with a coil. After taking to a shop could find the problem, pet boys couldn’t find the problem, I towed my 2023 toyota corolla s. To a dealer ship he took 4 days put one new coil in and charged me $589, a week later my car broke down?

  4. Have a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander, 125,000 miles on her. When coming to a red light and slowing down to 5-10 mph then light turns green and car does not come to a full stop, there is this “bump” coming from the back of the car when I accelerate.

    There is no slipping of gears, just this bump. If car comes to full stop then press accelerator, no bumping. What is this? Please advise.

  5. Another Check Engine code that the fuel filter can pop up as is the Small Evac Leak. This was for my 2002 Saturn LW200. I was so used to it being the gas cap cause I have morons that don’t know how to put that on. Turned out, the fuel filter had not been replaced for what looked to be about 9 years. I bought the car a year and a half ago and thought the mechanic replaced it when they replaced the fuel pump. Guess I was wrong.

  6. I have a 2000 grand marquis it cut off on me and it wont start and there no fuel.getting to the rail on top off them motor it will not start and sounds like the relay ticks when turn the key but still no fuel in the rail what could it be thanks

  7. I have a 2015 Chevy Cruze 63000 miles on it My check engine light came on. But the seemed to run okay, and my husband changed the air filter. But now the car is running really rough. Could it be the fuel fit now the car. Seems to want to quit when stopped at a light etc ..Any ideals?
